A Financial Wellness Score and the path to raise it

Ayco's post-login application lets users take an assessment, from which Ayco creates a "Financial Wellness Score." Users are then guided down a learning path that raises their score through a mix of education and action.

01 · The brief

Make financial wellness measurable

The experience turns a broad idea, financial wellness, into a score people can see and work to improve: assess, score, then learn and act.

The goal was to keep Ayco competitive: many of its close competitors offered similar tool sets. The bet behind the score was that educating customers and encouraging them to keep learning would build their trust in Ayco and increase how much they used it.

Ayco served large and small corporate clients, their C-suite executives and first-time investors.

03 · Decisions

Why it works this way

Align before designing. As part of the alignment and prioritization team, I met with Ayco onsite several times to map its business goals and Goldman Sachs's requirements against what each user group needed. That made the Financial Wellness Index the centerpiece and set the guardrails: personalized, profile-driven content, clear pathways, tablet-friendly, and secure enough to pass Goldman Sachs review.

Eight questions, one per category. Eight simple questions across eight financial categories produce a preliminary score. People can go deeper where a category needs it, and the assessment stays short enough to finish.

Invite people in, never block them. The welcome screen offers "Start Building Your Score" next to "I'll do this later," so the dashboard is always one click away.

Learning that visibly moves the score. Each lesson in the personalized path earns learning points on top of the assessment score. "% complete" and "Pick up where you left off…" bring people back. Lessons mix articles, videos and seminars with real actions, like outlining a risk plan or contacting your Ayco coach.
